My device was DOA -- from Keyspan's support pages:

The 'TUSB3410 Boot Device' item in the Apple System Profiler or in the Windows Device Manager means that your Keyspan adapter is defective. If you are in the US, we ask that you contact Keyspan directly for an immediate replacement of your unit. If you are outside of the US, please contact Keyspan for a distributor in country that will replace this unit for you.

Getting and having to arrange replacement of a dead unit was slightly inconvenient, and I'm down the cost of the postage and packaging for the return, but now that Expansys have sent me a working one I guess I'm content.
